Ahh, Now I Know Why I Have a Stash
I read the directions several times, especially since the pattern said to make sure you understood and read all the directions before cutting. I was down to just four subcuts. I kept repeating the cut numbers to myself. I needed (8) 5.5 x 9 subcuts for four fabrics. I picked the fabrics, I was ready to go. I read the pattern again. I said the numbers again. I made the first cut...5.5x8. At least I started with my least favorite fabric of the four.
First thought, alter the pattern. Ooooh, way to complicated.
Second thought, sew the pieces back together and then cut again. No, I would never ever be happy with that solution. I would never see anything but those sewn together pieces when I looked at the quilt.
Third thought, trash that fabric throughout the quilt and start with something else. Has to be a batik. Go into the wall of fabric stash. First five batiks I have marked for other projects, wait, I have the one I bought at the quilt show that I just had to have but did not have a pattern in mind. Yeah it works with the other fabrics.
So there I have it. A reason to have a stash. It is not because I am addicted to buying beautiful pieces of colored cloth, it is because a stash is necessary to fix my mistakes.
All subcuts are made now. Bobbins are wound. I believe I can go back and start piecing...after I read the pattern another hundred times.
Everyone have a great day!

They do come in handy when mistakes are made, or when you are creating at 2a.m.!

Lucky that your stash included the perfect thing!.....or even something that would work. I have resorted to using up stash in the creative late night sewing spurts.....generally it works well. Stash is a good thing!

Re: Ahh, Now I Know Why I Have a Stash
I am addicted to fabric...but love scrappy quilts...good for that fabric that when I rediscover it my first thought is "What was I thinking when I bought this?"..usually works out okay in a scrap quilt...so no waste...otherwise I would be asking for addresses to send my uglies to!
