    Default Table hight

Right now I am using my dining room table for quilting and sewing it seems a little high do you like your machine lower so you are looking down on it? It seems like it would be easier and I was thinking of buying a table made for my machine

    Louise,

Yes, I like to be high enough to look down on my sewing but low enough that my feet can touch the floor. Barb

I have an adjustable chair...and adjust it up and down for where I'm working...but I still like to have a table low enough that I can look down on my sewing and relax my arms.

My dad made mine....Went to the local cabinet discount store, 2 cabinets and some nice pyle wood. He cut out for the machine to drop to table level...it is a little high, but better than sitting on the dining table...total cost $200, and lots of love from my dad!

I think it seems high because you do not have the machine bed at the same height as the table. A sewing table would certainly help that.

I have two sewing tables, one came with my Janome 7700, and one is a Sew Ezi table ( www.seweziusa.com). The SewEzi table has a custom made plastic insert to make it fit around my sewing machine, the other table has the insert to make a flat table for the Janome 7700. This is to make an extension table unnecessary. I guess the sewing tables drop the sewing bed of the machine down to the level of the table top. Both of those tables are 29-1/2" high, which is the same height as my dining room and kitchen table. If you had a sewing table, it would drop the sewing bed down, and the table will seem lower. I also know there is a generic sewing table at Hancock for $99, I almost bought that before I found the Sew Ezi (which was a lot more money, but it is portable)

Nice set up! All you need is an adjustable task chair from a big box store or office supply store. Dining room chairs tend to sit too low .

The table is beautiful and it is something that you will always have from your dad.. That is very special. I was going to say the same thing about the chair. I have an office chair that is on wheels and I can adjust the height to where I am most comfortable when I sew. She is right, any time I have tried using a kitchen/ dining chair they have always been too low. If you cannot get a chair right now, try putting a pillow on this one to raise you up a little.

When recently researching the height of cutting tables, I came across info that might help you, too. The height of the sewing surface should be 9 " above the seat of your chair. Your chair should be positioned in height that your feet touch the floor with knees bent at 90 degrees.....then measure up from that level. Another site said to sit with arms bent at 90 degrees and measure to the floor....then add 5 1/2 to 7 " to that measurement. They were stating that your arms should be slightly upward toward your machine.......not straight out at elbow height. I hope this helps. I know it makes a huge difference to have equipment that is ergo dynamic.......less stress and strain on the body and thus less aches and pains. The total height of sewing tables varies between 28 and 36 inches....based on your height, arm length, etc.

DCT4 - I love the table your dad made for you! How lucky you are! It looks so pretty, too. It is great he recessed your machine as well.

I sew on a desk that my husband had when I married him. I am tall - 5' 10" - so I don't have any trouble with its height. I do wish I had a bit more desktop room, but I wouldn't have the space in the room for it.

I LOVE the table your dad made for you, and this has given me an idea. I inherited a mid-century modern desk that belonged to my dad. The base is a standard desk base. The top is made of solid wood, 1 1/2" thick, and is 6'4" x 4'. It is a behemoth! However, something that size is perfect for all sorts of projects. I'm thinking I may want to modify it so I can cut out a hole (meep!) and drop in my sewing machine. I'd save the cut out piece, maybe put a finger hole in it, so that I can continue to use the desk for other things. Now if I can just bring myself to chop up the family heirloom...
If you can't see it from 50 yards away on a galloping horse, it doesn't matter.
