I think it seems high because you do not have the machine bed at the same height as the table. A sewing table would certainly help that.
I have two sewing tables, one came with my Janome 7700, and one is a Sew Ezi table ( www.seweziusa.com). The SewEzi table has a custom made plastic insert to make it fit around my sewing machine, the other table has the insert to make a flat table for the Janome 7700. This is to make an extension table unnecessary. I guess the sewing tables drop the sewing bed of the machine down to the level of the table top. Both of those tables are 29-1/2" high, which is the same height as my dining room and kitchen table. If you had a sewing table, it would drop the sewing bed down, and the table will seem lower. I also know there is a generic sewing table at Hancock for $99, I almost bought that before I found the Sew Ezi (which was a lot more money, but it is portable)
