I bought a Fiskars rotating cutting mat yesterday but when I try to rotate it the top come loose from the bottom and just slides every where. Am I doing something wrong or did I get a bad mat?

I have an Olfa one, it comes apart but not until you take it apart. I don't know what the deal is with the Fiskars mats. I just know I love mine and wouldn't trade it for the world. I do take it apart when I'm squaring up small quilts while they are still hot on the ironing board, I just slip that under the corner, use one of my square rulers and measure and cut. They are so handy. Hope you can get the thing figured out, or returned and get an Olfa. I know the Olfa mats are $45 regular price, but we got it at JoAnns with a coupon for half price.
I have trouble with mine, too. At first, it wouldn't rotate at all. I took an exacto knife and trimmed it just a tiny bit, and that did the trick. It rotates now, but comes apart. I am glad to hear that others that have a non-Fiskar mat don't have this problem, but I am going to live with what I have.
I'd say you have a bad mat. It shouldn't pop apart when you try to rotate it. I too have an Olfa, I don't love it as much as other folks here do, but it doesn't come apart easily.
I'd take yours back and get a new one. Test drive it before you buy it.
Explain to the manager/sales clerk what happened with this one, and that you are sure it's NOT supposed to do this. You want to make sure you are getting one that works before you leave the store so you don't have to make another trip in ad waste your valuable sewing time. You want them to watch you while you undo the packaging so they can see that you didn't mess it up or that you aren't trying to steal something. They are usually more than happy to let you examine the product before you buy it, if you approach them that way.
I also have a fiskers,, have you got the black plastic center the right way up,, I say this as i had same problem,, the flat side to the table also i took the sticky tape away and found it worked better,, ok i drops out when i pick it up but thats minor thing,
I have an Olfa one and love it. Mine doesn't come apart.
I really like mine. It's the green one. I think it's an OLFA.
I have a Fiskars mat and it hasn't come apart on me at all. I have heard of other people having the issue when rotating though.
My Fiskars mat comes apart too....so when I pick it up I have to make sure I grab both parts. As long as it's on the table it's fine and rotates as it should.
Mine is an Australian brand (Matilda's Own) and its great, I use it all the time I only mention this in case any of you Aussie gals out there are thinking of purchasing one.
I have the Olfa rotating mat, at first I had a little difficulty because it is in two pieces, but it took a few minutes to figure it out.
Make sure your base is secure then place the top on correctly. I'll guess they are built similarly and you will be fine. I like it very much, especially making the "crazy quilt" where you have to cut each piece. Keep trying.:icon_hi:
I have the same trouble with my Fiskars rotating mat. It has loosened up some since it's had some use, but overall I'm not thrilled with it. I have better luck using a small cutting mat and spinning it around.
Has anybody had a problem with the standard Fiskar cutting mat? I was cutting today, and cut through the green 'self healing' surface mat. :(
Never experienced this with my Olfa...
I have the same problem with the Fiskars rotating mat! Should have taken it back when I first got it. I just use the top part because it just slips out of the rotating part. Would not recommend this mat to anyone.
I have the green Olfa mat. Have not had problems with it, but wish I had gotten the smaller one. The larger one takes more space to turn (duh!) and I'm usually cutting smaller pieces so really didn't need the large one. I'll keep it anyway because it keeps the pieces intact while switching angles.
