A Day with Monk Seals at Makaha Beach :D
Got up to a beautiful morning today, headed to the Farmers Market to stock up the fridge with fresh produce and some local made cucumber kimchi. The weather was so nice that we came right home and made up sandwiches/drinks and headed to the beach.
The first thing I do is head to the tide pools and Monk Seals were beaching in...OMG had to catch them on film. The darker of the two is the male and a second male kept trying to come on shore but he wasn't having it at all. No sneaking in on his girl. lol He would get up and chase him right back into the water.
We got to the beach before the Lifeguards got there, so I was able to get about 20 ft from them to take photos. They can be pretty fast even from a "lounge about" position, don't want to get too close. Once the LGs get there and more folks arrive with kids/dogs, they rope off an area about 40 feet from each side of them. People from the far edge of the other side of the beach (about 3.5 miles) were coming to take photos of the seals.
The water in our area is very clear and you can be chest high and still see your feet, just the way I like it. If Tigger The Tiger Shark is in the area, I want fair warning to get the H*LL out. :D
I did end up swimming between a school of small fish about 3-4" big for a couple of minutes, kind of weird to feel all these little things running in on you. Not too worried about being lunch for something big as I was only about 5 feet from shore. hehe
Had our lunch and around noon the Hawaiian Shaved Ice truck came and we had Pina Colada and Strawberry Half & Half in a bowl - oh so yummy!!
All in all a wonderful first Saturday home!

Ruby...You and Don truly live in paradise! Your pictures are awesome!! Do you plan to make a Hawaiian Quilt? I so admire the patterns, but all that applique!! I wish I had made one when I was younger and still able to hand quilt. Shave ice is one of my favorite treats!! Barb

Aloha Ruby I'm over on Kauai:) I really enjoyed reading that. I have a funny story about monk seals. A bunch of us were camping on the south shore and some of us were up early. Well one of the young guy's comes tearing down the beach yelling you have to come, there is a big sea slug down there. We all run down and its a seal laying in the sand. You should of seen his face when we all started cracking up and told him what it was. Talk about classic!
Cucumber kimchi is one of favorite treats!
