Quilting sedentary !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cause i have bad trouble with my back and spine,, doctor decided to send me to physio at hospital,, i hasten to say i will not be going back,:icon_sniff::icon_eek:
she asked me what i could do, I do walk for about an hour with my dog twice a day,, when i said i did some quilting, the answer was a Sedentary hobby then,,
now i think you can get quite a bit of exercise what with standing up measuring and cutting, sitting down making sure you are sewing the right side :o ,,, ok you aint running a marathon but you brain works overtime,, so i smiled sweetly and said try it, Cassie,,
Re: Quilting sedentary !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow - you'd think she would be happy with walking your dog for an hour 2 times a day. That's way more than what I get!
My idea of exercise is working in the garden and housecleaning (only when necessary). I've heard people say that neither one is any kind of exercise. It's better than sitting on my butt all day eating bon-bons and watchine nothing on the tube.
Quilting is exercise - it is keeping our brains from getting jellied up. I know I sure do lots of over-thinking when working a pattern.
Hope you can find someone to help you with your back and spine problems.
Hugs,
Re: Quilting sedentary !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have read articles about exercising while unloading the dishwasher, cleaning house, cooking . . . yes, and even dog-walking. Anyone who visits me in my sewing room knows that I am getting exercise - stooping over to pick up dropped items from the floor, jumping up to press a seam, running to turn off the TV if the phone rings, jumping up to square up blocks, moving furniture, refolding fabric, running upstairs to refill my iced tea glass, swinging from the balcony, chasing grandkids,
I see no reason to waste my time lifting weights one after another for 30 minutes a day - until you have lived in my shoes you have no reason to criticize me.
Quilting sedentary? I wish!

With you walking your dog every day you both get much more exercise then I do...All I'm getting is a bigger bottom...
Re: Quilting sedentary !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
blinks........... huh? I must quilt very oddly because I work up a real sweat quilting! Besides all that Sandy described (par the iced tea! Yuckkkkkk Why DO people drink cold tea?) I am up and down from my seat and walking the legnth of the house and back several times an hour anddddddd when quilting...... Well a king sized quilt is ****ed heavy and bulky. The phsio should try shoving and pulling and manipulating one of those through a sewing machine for 4 hours see how sweaty she gets.
Hurumphhhhhhhh
Re: Quilting sedentary !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with you Ms. Daisy...when I am finished quilting a quilt I am sore! Sedentery(sp) my A*S!
Re: Quilting sedentary !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with Sandy or I have been doing it wrong all these years. NOT a sedentary thing for me!
Re: Quilting sedentary !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had months of physical therapy over the last ten years for various reasons, and each time it helped me a lot. One thing is, however, that where you get your therapy, you must work each visit with a true physical therapist and not just do exercises led by a technician. The small town clinic here only has one P.T. who only sees you on your first visit. Bigger cities have it the other way. I wouldn't give up on P.T. It can really help your back and spine. Just ignore remarks like the sedentary one, and go forward. Good luck on relieving your pain!
Re: Quilting sedentary !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Quilting is anything but sedentary. By the time I have jumped up and down, ironed, sewed, cut, all the while using various muscles. I have had quite a work out. And the thing with my condition is that the more I do, the more I hurt. So for me personally, excercise is highly over rated, lol
Re: Quilting sedentary !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I keep my ironing board two rooms away from my sewing machine simply to get a little more movement in my day. Some days my feet get sore from all the walking back and forth!

It's a southern thing. We would ask "Why DO people drink hot tea with milk in it?"
LOL!!!
(Love you, Alison)
Re: Quilting sedentary !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You can tell your therapist never quilted! I can't believe you walk that much! The most I do is walk to the hay tent to feed the horse and mule and if it isn't extremely hot out I walk to the mailbox which is almost 200 yards from the house and the walk back is quite the uphill climb!
Iced tea is not just a southern thing, but Sweet Tea is I think. I like iced tea, but keep the sugar out of it. And hot tea is great too without the milk.
Re: Quilting sedentary !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How annoying. Sounds like the physio needs alot more training in her "bedside manners". I hate it when they assume they are always smarter at everything in life when they are in the position they are in. Especially the younger they are as physicians. She should have been open to hearing you out, though I like that you said try it. However if you need the physical therapy you should do it if your doctor recommended it. Maybe there is another person you could see than just her?
Re: Quilting sedentary !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You should of asked her what her 'hobby' is. Seems to me since Iv'e been here a lot of people sew for an income. Why do some people asume sewing is just a hobby? That really bugs me. I hate having to explain that I sell online when they they look at me like I don't have a real job.
I like cold tea and hot tea with milk:)
