Wow. That is one I haven't heard before. You were lucky to be there when it happened. You must be a quick thinker, too. Glad that you are getting a replacement.

I've never heard of a sewing machine catching on fire before. That is kinda scary. So glad you were there and caught it happening.
When life throws you scraps, make a quilt!
Wow how scary is this!I had no idea a machine could do that.My DD witnesses my sisters house burn down a couple of years ago ;she was 11; ever since then she has a ritual every night she makes her rounds and unplugs everything before she goes to bed.I get aggravated when she goes in my sewing room and unplugs all my stuff but I don't say anything because the fire has really scarred her for life. I am so glad you were there when it happened. The machine can be replaced.Mark this down as a lesson learned for all of us.
Sorry about your machine but it could have been much worse. Thankfully you and your family and home are ok. Hope you get your new machine soon. I know this sounds like a silly question but was your machine turned on? Was you sewing with it or was it off and just caught on fire. Makes me wonder if I need to unplug mine whenever I'm not using it.

My heart went into my throat when I read your post, because it reminded me of a post I made shortly after I joined the forum. I am reposting here because many people probably have not seen it and it will be a timely reminder:

Be warned. I am BORED.
This could be dangerous.
When you get cold just go stand in the corner.
They are usually 90 degrees.

Ever think about that? No? You only think about yourself??
Well this weekend I was sewing and the bulb by my needle went out so I pushed it back in thinking maybe it was just loose ...... To my surprise as soon as I touched it the lite came back on so that made me happy since I bought the machine on 6/4/12 ......I sewed for about 10 more minutes and turned off my machine I did notice as I'm thinking about it they the heat off the bulbs was more intense than usual..I didn't think anything more of this and went to bed..... I went I sew last night turned my machine on and went to cut some binding strips my back was turned towards my machine and there was just a weird smell that kept on getting worse at first I thought it was my new iron.... When I went to check it out and in the corner of my eye I seen smoke coming from my new machine ..... It caught the wires and the bulb on fire. I unplugged the machine and took a wet washcloth and put out the little flames.....Thank u all for ur concern....it could have been a lot worse than is was.... I am going to get the same model for my replacement.... I really love my machine I do have the worst luck with machines I hope I just got a lemon... My machine is such a new model there are no real review yet....
I wonder if the bulb was a halogen bulb. You aren't supposed to touch those with your bare fingers because the oil from your skin can get on the bulb and it gets hot enough to blow the bulb out. So maybe hot enough to catch it on fire too.

Karen, I had a toaster that I had gotten as a wedding present and that I loved dearly. The toast lowered itself and raised itself slowly. After 35 years, I thought I had better replace it, and I did. I am sure it was a fire hazard, too.
I always turn my machine and iron off before I leave the building where my sewing room is. I am afraid of fires, too. I am so glad that was all that burned.

gosh you were so lucky it could have nasty,, must admit i have left my machine on and gone out ,, will certainly think twice from now on
Glad it was just the machine and not anything more.
I always unplug my sewing machine, iron, and even toaster when not in use.
