Hi & Deciding on what new project to make! Triangle quilt?
Hello! Just dropping in to send my best and say hello. It's been a couple weeks since I finished the baby quilt and now I'm itching to start a new project. I think I'll check out the gallery for inspiration. My daughter really wants a triangle quilt but it sounds difficult and frustrating with all those bias edges and matching! Has anyone done one of those and if so, how? Paper piecing, or is there a template/ruler,tute somewhere?
I'm also biting the bullet and giving away another quilt. The sister of the baby-quilt recipient says I 'owe' her 4 quilts (she has 4 children from BEFORE I started quilting! and she's just kidding, lol!) and admired my 16-patch when I made it (I double-checked it was the one she had commented on on Facebook). I used 4 little off-cuts of practice quilting, over-cast the edges, and am going to give them to her at the shower (saying, "here are 4 quilts...you never said what size they had to be!")...but then, in private after the shower, give her the 'real' quilt. As much as I like it, I have too many on the back of my chair and I know I could make it again if I wanted to. There are going to be so many more quilts to come and I'm pretty sure she would appreciate the gift.
I also made my niece a card for the shower and quilted a wee tiny piece of the actual fabric I used in her quilt to have draping over the baby carriage on the card! It's like a sneak peek at her gift!

I have a few quilts that I don't give away for sentimental reasons but mostly give mine away too.....check out Jenny's hourglass tutorial....it uses triangles but you don't really deal that much with the bias edges....or you can use Best Press or your favorite spray starch to help keep them in shape. Or just make her a half square block quilt....I believe the bias is on the inside...again check the tutorials. Love your "mini" quilt and the card
Re: Hi & Deciding on what new project to make! Triangle quilt?
Making half square triangles is very easy and never involves bias edges, but I'm not sure that is what you want. I have the June Tailor Half Square ruler that I love so much, and it makes easy and incredibly accurate half and quarter square triangles. The one thing I do a bit different is I never cut something 7/8th. I up it to the next half inch, so if it says to make 3 7/8, I cut 4 1/2. It gives me a bit extra. Love it!!

I also use one of the marking channels to mark diagonals for snowball blocks, as well as to square up any regular block from 2 1/2 to 6 1/2 inches. I had a block that called for squaring up a 3 inch block, and I couldn't use this ruler as it only squares up on the half inch. It was so hard to square using a regular squaring ruler, and I forgotten that.

I have found someone who is almost as ornery as I am. Love the four quilts that you made. PERFECT!! Also think the card is a very special peek. Great ideas!!!

Yes, I now the 'little quilts' are cheeky!
Here is the photo daughter sent me of triangle quilt she has in mind (from a blog, http://www.happytogethercreates.com)...I realize I could just follow this lady's photo tutorial but I don't wanna! It just seems like a lot of fuss! lol!
Re: Hi & Deciding on what new project to make! Triangle quilt?
Angie, love the card and the little quilts. As everyone knows, I give almost all of mine away. Half square triangles are not hard to do if you start with squares, that will already be sewn together. Put your 2 squares, right sides together, mark them on the diagonal from corner to corner, then sew your 1/4" on either side of the mark. Cut them apart on your diagonal line, and voila, half square triangles already sewn. I have a pic in my Cardinal Glennon album of a quilt I did like this. Keep in mind though, I am not a perfectionist, so some seams may not be matching quite right, but you will get the general idea.

Love the 4 quilts idea, but your card is just perfect. I might have to steal the idea. Too cute!

I don't believe the triangles in the picture are HST. I believe that they are large QST. If you look at 2 of them together, they don't make a square. If you look at 6 of them, they make a hexagon. Course, now I don't think they are QST either. Probably Isocoles triangles. . . Oh, well, geometry is not my forte! here is a link to make 4 QST from 2 charm squares but you could adjust it for whatever size you are looking to use. http://www.cascadequilts.com/2010/04...m-2-charm.html

I'll throw my 2 cents in here. They aren't half-square or quarter-square triangles. They are 60 degree triangles. You may find other tutorials for this type quilt by looking up pyramid quilts. I believe it's done with an equilateral 60 degree triangle and just mindless seaming ... point up ... point down, rinse and repeat.
I love the detail of the card you made!
And I'm back again, here's a link to an explanation of different ways to lay these type quilts out. I'm not sure these are 60 degrees, but the ones in your picture are.

I think I must have been posting the same time that Angie was posting pics. I would have known they were not hsq. I will leave the angle of what these actually are to the math whizes. lol

What's next, Karen?? ;)
Re: Hi & Deciding on what new project to make! Triangle quilt?
Actually, Jenny's tute for the Christmas Table Runner using the large wedge is pretty much the triangle/pyramid shape...I'd just have to keep adding them to make a quilt...I think I can do this! Thanks for your help, everyone!:icon_happy:
Re: Hi & Deciding on what new project to make! Triangle quilt?
Glad you found the answers you needed, inspiration, and encouragement! Looks like you are off to another quilt. I think the "little quilts" are a hoot, but I truly adore your card. That will be a keeper for the baby book!
Re: Hi & Deciding on what new project to make! Triangle quilt?
What an adorable card! I want to make four quilts by Christmas and I want it to go stress free since I'm new at it. I came across this and am putting it on my list for one of them. Can't wait to see what you decided on!
