My ex-BIL had a lung to collapse several years ago.He too is a slim white male.He was a heavy smoker but has recently quit. He hasn't had anymore issues to this day.I am glad your husband is o.k. Hopefully there will be no leaks and you can put this behind you.Take care of yourself. He will be home soon.
