Default Hancock fabric charm packs...buyers beware

I had been watching some of Jenny's great tuts and ordered some charms from MSQC. I went to Hancock's to see if they had any charm packs I could practice on before my others arrived. They had a charm pack for only $5.99 so I thought I would give it a try. They had two of the same packs; both were tied very tight with a ribbon. I flipped the ends to see what the fabric looked like, not too bad. I did notice that one of the cuts was short by about an inch so I checked the other pack at it appeared to be good so I bought it. When I opened it up I noticed two things 1) half of the material was really ugly and 2) 7 of the pieces were cut including the fabric information (the color dots on the bottom of the salvage). It wouldn't have bothered me as much, except some of strip was showing after I sewed the 1/4 seam allowance. I had just the 9 patch sewn together and was on the table, boy it looked bad! I mentioned something to my DH about how awful the material was and he said "Oh good, it was hoping that wasn't something you were making for our house! So if you buy charms from Hancock fabric, check them over good beforehand.

I saw some at JoAnn's and thought about getting them but had read some posts about the precuts from WalMart, JoAnns etc. and decided against it. They might be cheaper...but for a couple of dollars more I'll buy the brand name ones. There's a quilt shop in the town I work in and they cut their own and they just don't look as nice as the ones I order. Also, they just put anything in the pack that looks like it might match some of the other fabric.

I've gotten short pieces in Moda charm packs, also a hole in a Moda layer cake ( that one really ticked me off!), so there are quality control issues in precuts. I've seen some decent fat quarters at Hancock, I think their top line stuff is called "Top Drawer", but that is the stuff that I also found at Tuesday Morning much cheaper.

I have purchased from Hancock's with no problems so far...I do like to look through the entire stack...I love the ease of precuts but after purchasing them from all over, I find that I really miss cutting my own...to me, the process is relaxing and part of my own enjoyment of making a quilt...I am so sorry that happened to you--all that work! I am appalled that the selvages would be used! That is horrible!

I bought Tonga Treat layer cakes from MSQC, and they were not all cut to 10 inches, plus the fabric was very thin, but that might be because it was batik. I posted once before about my disappointment in the way they were cut. I just think you get bad things no matter the brand or the place of purchase. I don't buy many charm packs preferring fat quarters, layer cakes, and yardage to them. I would make sure that you like all the fabric though. I have had a lot of disappointment buying fabric of any type on line. You just can't judge the color well, nor can you judge the pattern. Better to buy in person, but the nearest store is 55 - 60 miles away from me.

So sorry you had such issues with your charm packs. I was thinking though, if you make a D9P out of them, the ones that part of the selvidge will not show once it is re sewn. In my opinion, you can get bad items, no matter where or what manufacturer. It is not all about buyer beware, but quality control coming from the manufacturer. Hancocks, like JoAnn, Hobby Lobby, and yes, even our beloved M*QC, has no control over what the manufacturer lets slip through. If no one bought their pre cuts, because of quality issues, they wouldn't be carrying them. Just chalk it up to a bad batch, and work with what you have. Peace, blessings, and happy quilting.

Thanks for all the comments! I have not bought many pre-cuts and thought that this was an isolated problem. I know now to be more careful when selecting pre-cuts.
