    Default rag quilt question

    Hey everyone!

I have a question for you guys. I am making a rag quilt for my soon to be here in a few.months baby niece (LOL) and was wondering if it would be okay to have the backing all one piece or is it better to cut it the same size the first finished block is going to be if that makes sense?

Thanks for any advice you give me. :-)

CJ - so that becomes your STBHIAFMBN

You could do the back in all one piece, but why would you want to? I see no reason why it couldn't be done but if you do a rag quilt with the front and back together the same size then you have a bit more fabric in your seams to clip and fray making the rag part a bit fuller.

But, I think it is a personal choice - whatever you want to do. Remember, we have NO QUILT POLICE.
    Be warned. I am BORED.
    This could be dangerous.

When you get cold just go stand in the corner.
    They are usually 90 degrees.

Ever think about that? No? You only think about yourself??

I have never hear of doing a rag quilt with a solid back. You really need all the seams (front and back) to be sewn together so you will have nice, full fringe on the top side. As a matter of fact, I make my rag quilts with three layers of flannel (no batting), using the middle one like batting and the edges of all three layers are snipped and makes the most fluffy fringe. Have to agree with the others, especially Barb. You need to cut ALL your fabric squares, (same size) including the back, and use flannel for the batting cut to the same size. If you do that your, 'rag' edges will have the fullness they need to be fluffy. If all you 'ragged' was the front of the quilt, I don't think you would like the result, because then you would only have one thin layer of ragging.

I just can't wrap my head around how you would get all the layers together with a solid backing piece. If you quilted it like you did any other quilt you would be sewing over the seams on the front so that would make it even less fringed. I just don't think it would work out right.
