Default If I were a cowboy, I would say a discouraging word!

I started the Group for the Quilt of Valor for the young man from Missouri. I picked the Missouri Star Block (for obvious reasons) and I cannot get the dad burned thing to come out to 8.5 inches finished! Arrggggghhh! What am I doing wrong? I followed instructions on the link (that I posted) to the letter and it still won't come out right. Help!!!!!

Make sure that you are taking a scant 1/4 inch seam. I measured my center part, the square in square, and it was 4.5 inches before I sewed on the outside part.

If I would have used an even 1/4 inch seam it wouldn't have made it to 8.5
I also used Best Press to make sure everything was nice and crisp while I was sewing.

ughh, this does not sound good. I am going to try to do some this week, and don't want to have to go get more americana fabric. I thought it said in the instructions it finished at 8". Will have to check it out.

Your 1/4 " may not be. Try putting some tape down 1/4" from your needle and see if that measurement matches the 1/4" that you've been using.

finished it is 8". Unfinished (before being sewn to the other blocks) it is 8.5". You have to remember the seam allowances.

    You ladies are scaring me.
    Be warned. I am BORED.
    This could be dangerous.

When you get cold just go stand in the corner.
    They are usually 90 degrees.

A giraffe's coffee would be cold by the time it reached the bottom of his throat.
Ever think about that? No? You only think about yourself??

Sandy, got me scared to. I found some great little pieces in my stash, that would work wonderfully. I don't want to mess those up and have to find other fabrics that I like as well. I guess what ever happens with my attempt will let me know if I have it right or not. I did ok with Douwes block, which in itself surprised me. But this one has much smaller pieces. As Doris Day said "Que Sera, sera. Whatever will be will be"

Actually, I'd forgotten all about that block.....my life has been upside down lately.
I have made a sample and it did turn out at 8 1/2 inches but I want to make another one and change the order of the colors. Need to check the mail date. I'd forgotten all about it. Haven't been home and now about to leave again. Not a vacation, either, taking care of the sick and elderly. Hope for a break before I'm in one or the other of those categories. LOL
Brenda Take scant 1/4 inch seams and you can always trim your block if it's too big.

Haven't checked on that group lately....as to instructions, were we supposed to wash our fabrics beforehand? Didn't see that info any where.

Now I am getting scared. Wanted to make a couple of blocks before I signed up..as I had both machines tyed up with other projects til recently. Ekks. I am glad I didn't cut into my fabric just yet. I have some really cheapo fabric that might meet the "test it first" catagory.
