Almost Ready for Georgia!
Boy...we're too old for this!
This Monday the Pod was delivered to Kat and Matt's apartment and the packing and shlepping began! Luckily Don is a strong guy for his age and is like the pink bunny who keeps on going 'till it's done. Matt with his Crohn's needs frequent breaks, Kat has Penny to feed every 1.5/2 hours and I'm chasing Oliver between packing. Zander got lucky, he went to his Dad to spend the next month with him before the GA school starts. :)
They need to clean the apartment this afternoon, meet the transport co for the 2 cars and the folks who bought the fridge. Then Sat is pool time at the hotel, yea! 4am shuttle pickup on Sunday morning to LAX...6:50 am Delta to Atlanta!! Two sets of grandparents will be waiting at the baggage claims to meet Miss Penny and Oliver - they might even say "Hello" to us. lol
Was just told that Atlanta will be 110* on Sunday. Yikes, that will do a number on my Fibro for sure. Don and I will do our two week research to see if his VA Medical is valid in GA, what the rent and utilities are like, could I restart biz2biz design in GA from a home studio, etc., etc., etc.
If yes, then Don and I will be doing a "Move to the Mainland Plan" - luckily our place in Hawaii is a one bedroom of less 650 sq ft lol Mostly Family Delfts Blue/Crystal, computers, softwares and two sewing machines. 5 suitcases and a 4'x4'x4' crate coming and going I guess. Might be 5'x5'x5' since I bought fabric in Hawaii and on this trip. :icon_woohoo:
I'll have to back track and see what has happened here on the Forum this last week - besides the new/old look (glad to have to editing features again).
Huggers, Ruby
Re: Almost Ready for Georgia!
You've got a lot on your plate right now! Hope all the moving goes smoothly!
Re: Almost Ready for Georgia!
sounds like quite the adventure. hope it's smooth sailing for everyone involved!
Re: Almost Ready for Georgia!
I do know that the rent/homes ourside Atlanta are less expensive than in the city. Not sure anyone would want to live directly in Atlanta anyway. Traffic is terrible. I would think that VA benefits are good nationwide. There are plenty of military bases in Georgia as well.
I hate moving, glad my husband is retired from the Air Force now.

Matt's Dad lives in Suwanee a suburb in the north, they're going to stay with him and DSM for a year as they have a big 6 bedroom. :) They have no idea beyond a 10 day visit what it will be like with a 9, 6 and new born in their house, lol. We had Zander for his first 6 years, then when he was 8 and Ollie as a new born 'till 10 months when Matt got real sick just before Ollie was born. Don and I kept it all mums. :icon_heh:
We've been looking at the surrounding suburbs, actually would like a bit more country side within a 20 minute drive from Suwanee. There are small lakes near there, an old ranch style house would be great to rent. We'll see. :)
Re: Almost Ready for Georgia!
I wish you all a smooth move!! There's little in this life I dislike more than moving. You will be so happy when you get settled in GA....I see all the DKS being spoiled rotten!! Isn't that a grandparent's job!! Hugs, Barb
Re: Almost Ready for Georgia!
Good luck Ruby, a lot of going going on!! With a New Born too!! We will be play "Were in the World is Ruby". LOL
Take care be safe and don't over do!!!
Love, hugs, and Blessing on your adventure,
Jan G.
Re: Almost Ready for Georgia!
Take it easy, enjoy your travel and searches. If I had my druthers and was faced with Georgia, I would head to Saint Mary - way down on the eastern coast a short distance from Florida. Wonderful and very inexpensive life style . . . or at least it was about 10 years ago when we were trying to decide where to hang our retirement hats.
Re: Almost Ready for Georgia!
Sounds like D-day is fast approaching. I hope the other GP's realize how long a year is, and what they are getting into. lol. Good luck in search for some place close, but not to close to the kids. I would think Don's VA medical should be covered anywhere nationwide. Heck we have 2 VA hospitals in St. Louis. You must get away from the city. There are many nice areas surrounding Atlanta, that the COL should be significantly less. Good luck in your search, and keep us posted.
Re: Almost Ready for Georgia!
We used to live in Chattanooga, TN which is only 2 hours from Atlanta. Housing 20 years ago was dirt cheap and small(er) town living is what I prefer to living in a city. Good luck with your search.
Re: Almost Ready for Georgia!
Oh, I so hope you don't have any trouble with the VA benefits, you will be in my prayers. Godspeed!
Re: Almost Ready for Georgia!
Life is an adventure......enjoy the ride!
Re: Almost Ready for Georgia!
I am worn out from reading your post, try and enjoy the move, the new adventure.
Re: Almost Ready for Georgia!
I lived in North GA for a little over 20 years, my son lives in Lawrenceville GA now (below Atlanta) and I love GA. One day I hope to move back. I would think that the VA wouldn't be a problem (well no more problem that VA is). Enjoy your trip.
Re: Almost Ready for Georgia!
Apparently they have a first class VA medical center in Atlanta http://www2.va.gov/directory/guide/facility.asp?ID=38
Re: Almost Ready for Georgia!
I hope you enjoy your trip. Please try to stay cool and take care of yourself. Nothing like having a fibro flare while traveling. I wouldnt wish that on anyone. Enjoy those babies! Hugs

Thanks Kathy, you know the background on Don's story. We want to make sure we are set before we even consider the move to Georgia, we don't want a repeat of CA. :P

Re: Almost Ready for Georgia!
Thank you all for the well wishes. We're excited to see Atlanta and the outskirts since we've never been there. Planning a shopping trip to Whipstitch for modern fabric cuts, I buy from them on Etsy and follow their blog. :) It's my reward for the last 7 weeks of babysitting/caretaking/packing. hehe

From what I've heard it can be a big problem!
