My first quilters meeting
Well, I went out on a ledge and drove to the closest big town and went to the monthly quilters meeting. It was very nice and lots of people were there, I was surprised. However, there were not many ladies my age. Everyone was nice and helpful since I had brought along a sample of my first project. They had lots of beautiful show and tell quilts and I was overwhelmed at all the talent in the room. These ladies do amazing things. I just wanted to share what a positive time I had at the Asheville N.C. meeting :)
Re: My first quilters meeting
Glad you had a good time. I haven't been to one but I think on Saturday I'm going to sign up for a class at a quilt shop. I need to do a search for my area to see if there is any quilt meetings I might be interested in attending.
I found a list for Ohio and see at least one for my area.
Re: My first quilters meeting
I have mentioned in the long-ago past that both my husband and I do woodworking (although I have been away from it since the sewing machines started grabbing my attention more and more). Anyway, we went to a huge auction where a wood supply store was going out of business - and everyone there bidding was some type of woodworker. As we were leaving at the end of the day I over heard one of the auction clerks tell someone "You know, this has been the best group of people I've ever run into at an auction." And you know what? She was right.
And then I got involved in quilting and was very reluctant to attend a guild meeting until I found out that my sister had recently joined one and they meet only three or four miles from my house. So I had to try it, right? Of course. I walked in and over half the women (and men) there had to greet me, find out who I was, my quilting experience, etc. And I walked away that evening thinking "This is the best group of people I have ever been associated with" . . . Of course I joined the guild that evening.
The reason for the story? I believe that whenever you have people with similar interests grouped together that the best comes out of all of them. I am not normally a mixer, but when I have something truly in common with someone then I can spill it all. I think one of the reasons I tend to be off-the-cuff, silly and sarcastic is because I am basically a very private person and have found through the years that humor sometimes makes my life easier and I can face people better.
Oh, now the truth comes out and you all know that I am a fake and just make up stuff . . .
Re: My first quilters meeting

I have been wondering about guilds....sounds so intimidating. I think I'll just start with some classes and go from there.
Re: My first quilters meeting
I haven't joined our guild for the same reason Shirley, it sounds intimidating. I keep thinking about it though....
Re: My first quilters meeting
Glad you enjoyed your meeting. There are no meetings close to me. And I am somewhat of a hermit! I really don't like leaving my little Ozark mountain to go anywhere.
Re: My first quilters meeting
The closest group that I know of is about an hour away. Would like to find a group closer to me. Don't really have the time now anyway.

Jennifer,
I'm so glad you had such a positive first experience at a guild meeting. And just think, this is happening all around the world to lesser or larger degree! I always love the show 'n tell segment best at meetings.
