Default Sewing with cone threads . . . thread stand?

I ordered some thread that comes in a cone and it twists all over the place in my machine. I have been away from sewing for a long time so cone thread is sort of new to me (well, besides cone thread to goes in my now dead serger). How do I correct this twisting? Is it the thread, the way the thread is put on the cone or that I am trying to use it on my old machine? I did find this link about a thread stand-should I buy one?

I would not be without one.... it's all is use for all machines... good quality thread most always comes on cones and is much more thrifty... most quilters i know use,,, grey, black, cream or white for all their piecing.... you don't have to buy an expensive one... but it's always nice to have a new toy!!!! The one i have is heavy metal bottom and stel pin with loop...

i have this one coming in a couple of weeks.. by quilter friend ordered me one, knowing i would love it...

I've been looking at those holders because the machine spool pins are sometimes not long enough for the cones/spools. I'll have to take a trip around Amazon and see what's there.

here is the one i use now.... LOVE it...
ps... there is a "plastic" one out there,, it's doable, but so lite weight it bends and can tip over... the metal is worth it....

Hehe, I'm lazy or cheap, I guess. My serger sits behind my sewing machine on the same table and I just use it as a thread holder for my regular machine.

Definitely buy a thread stand. It is impossible to use large cones of thread without one. I have the same one that GrammaBabs is presently using and I think I have had it for about 30 years.

I do believe that Karen and Marebear have the right approach.

There is one way to help control the twist in your threads (I have this problem with Gutermann cotton on the King spools) - thread it through a styrofoam peanut before taking it through your normal threading process.

I also do machine embroidery work and put my threads in baby food jars that I set in a wooden dinnerware drawer divider. I need to take some pictures.

I'm waiting until I have used all my CDs and DVDs for computer stuff so I can have one of the cone holders though.
    Be warned. I am BORED.
    This could be dangerous.

When you get cold just go stand in the corner.
    They are usually 90 degrees.

A giraffe's coffee would be cold by the time it reached the bottom of his throat.
Ever think about that? No? You only think about yourself??

I just set the cone in a coffee cup behind my machine. I've not had any issues doing it this way. I bought one of those cheap plastic stands but had to put the coffee cup with the thread in on the base to keep it from flying away. Then I got the bright idea: What do I need this plastic thing for! Now I just use the coffee cup.
