Sewing with cone threads . . . thread stand?
I ordered some thread that comes in a cone and it twists all over the place in my machine. I have been away from sewing for a long time so cone thread is sort of new to me (well, besides cone thread to goes in my now dead serger). How do I correct this twisting? Is it the thread, the way the thread is put on the cone or that I am trying to use it on my old machine? I did find this link about a thread stand-should I buy one?

I would not be without one.... it's all is use for all machines... good quality thread most always comes on cones and is much more thrifty... most quilters i know use,,, grey, black, cream or white for all their piecing.... you don't have to buy an expensive one... but it's always nice to have a new toy!!!! The one i have is heavy metal bottom and stel pin with loop...

i have this one coming in a couple of weeks.. by quilter friend ordered me one, knowing i would love it...
Re: Sewing with cone threads . . . thread stand?
I've been looking at those holders because the machine spool pins are sometimes not long enough for the cones/spools. I'll have to take a trip around Amazon and see what's there.

here is the one i use now.... LOVE it...
ps... there is a "plastic" one out there,, it's doable, but so lite weight it bends and can tip over... the metal is worth it....

Hehe, I'm lazy or cheap, I guess. My serger sits behind my sewing machine on the same table and I just use it as a thread holder for my regular machine.
Re: Sewing with cone threads . . . thread stand?
I'm cheap too :) Here is my set-up - just a CD pkg bottom and safety pin.

Definitely buy a thread stand. It is impossible to use large cones of thread without one. I have the same one that GrammaBabs is presently using and I think I have had it for about 30 years.

I do believe that Karen and Marebear have the right approach.
There is one way to help control the twist in your threads (I have this problem with Gutermann cotton on the King spools) - thread it through a styrofoam peanut before taking it through your normal threading process.
I also do machine embroidery work and put my threads in baby food jars that I set in a wooden dinnerware drawer divider. I need to take some pictures.
I'm waiting until I have used all my CDs and DVDs for computer stuff so I can have one of the cone holders though.
Re: Sewing with cone threads . . . thread stand?
I just set the cone in a coffee cup behind my machine. I've not had any issues doing it this way. I bought one of those cheap plastic stands but had to put the coffee cup with the thread in on the base to keep it from flying away. Then I got the bright idea: What do I need this plastic thing for! Now I just use the coffee cup.

Now why didn't i think of that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!LOL
Re: Sewing with cone threads . . . thread stand?
Ain't ya all so clever -- This is why I love this place. This is really good info that isn't common knowledge for most sewers. Thanks Gals. I found a CD stand that I almost threw away..but the Scotch in me said "kept it because IT looked Useful for something"...
My table isn't big enough to utilize my serger, but I sure will use that CD Stand!!!
Re: Sewing with cone threads . . . thread stand?
I definitely recommend a thread stand or one of the ideas mentioned above. Sometimes I find thread that still twists, even when on a thread stand. Although this video demonstrates a method of handling metallic thread, I use it for any difficult thread that twists:

Good tip Patty! Thanks for sharing! Hugs, Jan L.
Re: Sewing with cone threads . . . thread stand?
they have cone thread adapters that you put in the cone for around 99 cents so you can use them on your regular pin on your machine. kellie

Re: Sewing with cone threads . . . thread stand?
My DH made my thread cone holder with an empty CD holder and stiff wire. Works great! I also saw an online picture of a piece of coat hanger wire with a loop bent into one end taped to the top of a sewing machine so the loop sticks out behind the machine and over a thread cone in a mug.
Re: Sewing with cone threads . . . thread stand?
Everyone is quite inventive here! I never thought of using cones for my sewing machine, and the one I use for quilting, I don't know if a cone holder would stay while the carriage is moving over the quilt. I have a question, though. Do you have a problem winding a bobin with a cone holder? I would think the tension would be a problem, but maybe not.
Re: Sewing with cone threads . . . thread stand?
I don't have any problems winding bobbins from a cone. I run the thread through the bobbin winder tension guide on the sewing machine like I would with a regular spool.
Re: Sewing with cone threads . . . thread stand?
Wow- thanks everyone! Great ideas. I knew there had to be a solution to this curly mess of thread. I found a cd holder and will try it tomorrow. :)
Re: Sewing with cone threads . . . thread stand?
I bought a cast iron spool stand from this catalog that used to sell sewing supplies. It has a tall metal hook to guide the thread,
but the pin was too short, so i mangled a crochet hook to make it tall enough.
