Ain't ya all so clever -- This is why I love this place. This is really good info that isn't common knowledge for most sewers. Thanks Gals. I found a CD stand that I almost threw away..but the Scotch in me said "kept it because IT looked Useful for something"...

My table isn't big enough to utilize my serger, but I sure will use that CD Stand!!!

I definitely recommend a thread stand or one of the ideas mentioned above. Sometimes I find thread that still twists, even when on a thread stand. Although this video demonstrates a method of handling metallic thread, I use it for any difficult thread that twists:

they have cone thread adapters that you put in the cone for around 99 cents so you can use them on your regular pin on your machine. kellie

ps... there is a "plastic" one out there,, it's doable, but so lite weight it bends and can tip over... the metal is worth it....
This is the one I have...love it!

My DH made my thread cone holder with an empty CD holder and stiff wire. Works great! I also saw an online picture of a piece of coat hanger wire with a loop bent into one end taped to the top of a sewing machine so the loop sticks out behind the machine and over a thread cone in a mug.

Everyone is quite inventive here! I never thought of using cones for my sewing machine, and the one I use for quilting, I don't know if a cone holder would stay while the carriage is moving over the quilt. I have a question, though. Do you have a problem winding a bobin with a cone holder? I would think the tension would be a problem, but maybe not.

I don't have any problems winding bobbins from a cone. I run the thread through the bobbin winder tension guide on the sewing machine like I would with a regular spool.

Wow- thanks everyone! Great ideas. I knew there had to be a solution to this curly mess of thread. I found a cd holder and will try it tomorrow.
