i am in the same situation. i have been buying remants and occasionally charm packs. i am still learning about yardage.
If you really like it, I think you should get it...several of my friends say it may not be there when you go back....I agree with Patience...I am buying some charm packs and jelly rolls without really knowing what I'm going to do with them...I am also becoming a fabriholic, I think...I just want to stack them up and look at them...as far as yardage, I did purchase some when I visited Berlin, Ohio last month and glad I did...when I finished the last couple small quilts, I had a nice selection for the backing and borders...
what a wonderful time I'm having purchasing and sewing...have a great day Lonna
I usually buy 1/2 yard pieces if I find a collection of coordinates I like, at least 6 different ones, plus 1 to 2 yards for a border. This would be equal to 5 yards of fabric for a top, should make a twin size quilt. That chart on Moda Bake Shop under Weights and Measures should be something we all print out and carry with us as our bible for fabric purchasing.

I usually buy 2 or 3 yards - if I don't know what I'm doing with it.
I would buy 3 yards usually. And then just start dreaming of ways to use it..
If the fabric is something I really like, I would buy 3 yards so I have enough for borders, blocks and binding. All others I buy a yard.
I will usually buy between 2-3 yds. I also try to buy at least one coordinating fabric at the same time. Or sometimes will do like Jean said and buy several 1/2yd - 1yd pieces of a particular line. Believe me, it doesn't take long to build up a decent size stash.
I guess it would depend a few different things like;
1. How much can I afford today
2. How much do I love it
3. What will it be - accent, backing,focal fabric, binding
Hope that helps!
One thing I try to keep in mind is backing. If I see a fabric that would look good as backing I will buy several yards. Often I get so carried away with quilt tops I forget about backing then find I am in deep poo lol.
As for quilting fabric if its a large print I would probably but 2 yards max. If its a smaller print that would be good for borders maybe three. Accent colours are precious and is a disaster if you run out and can't get more...........so 2 yards minimum.
Cash flow is the main factor though. If I can't afford enough I dont buy it. I have been caught out too often by having just a little of something I love. It break the heart to neeeeeeeed more and not be able to get it lol
Thank you ladies that is a big help. I just keep seeing all these wonderful fall fabrics and I do love the fall colors. Picked up 1/2 yards of three diffrent fabrics the other day. Was thinking about using them to make a table runner. So we will see.
I usually buy 2-3 yds.................and then sometimes wish I had more!
I'm working on building my stash. Recently, I lucked up on some designer quilt fabrics at a great price. I bought 1/2 yard pieces and ended up with 37 yards total. I'm considering getting more if any is still available. When I find a background fabric that I like and can use for different projects I'll buy 5 yards (if finances allow). If I really LOVE a fabric, I try to get at least 3 yards.
