    Default Alaska Quilt Shop

I was able to visit three quilt shops in Alaska, but the one in Skagway was my very favorite, quiltalaska.com. Evidently Rushin'Tailor's and Changing Threads combined to make this shop.

They were super friendly and helpful. I bought several quilt kits, but some were for gifts, along with backing fabric and border fabric for one of the kits. I saw the same kits in a shop in Anchorage, but they were more expensive in Anchorage.

If you are going to be in Skagway, AK, I recommend you stop by and see what they have in stock. They also carry yarn, and cross stitch items.

We had so little time to shop when we were in Skagway. My brother's quest when he goes on vacation is to seek out scenic rail lines, so we took the White Pass train up the mountain. Very historic, since the boat we were on was the Spirit of '98, and that's when the Gold Rush in Skagway took place, we had to see where the gold rushers were going! Had enough time to pick up a few T-shirt souvenirs and get back on our boat to Haines.

I would love to go back and experience Alaska again, I loved it!

I'm going in August - can't wait. And will definately hit at least one quilt shop. Want to get an "Alaskan" fabric to make a momento quilt.

Cheryl, did you peak at the Hoffman fabrics in Skagway? They carry prints specifically made for Alaska and have some absolutely fantastic florals. My sister and BIL went last fall and I was so impressed with what she bought that I went on-line and ordered pieces from them - they will ship to the continental states. I've never been but would love to take a driving trip up sometime. Don't do well in crowds and think the ships and trains would get to me after a while. This old body has traveled with the worst of the litter much too often.
    Be warned. I am BORED.
    This could be dangerous.

When you get cold just go stand in the corner.
    They are usually 90 degrees.

A giraffe's coffee would be cold by the time it reached the bottom of his throat.
Ever think about that? No? You only think about yourself??

Sandy, I actually bought some Kaufman that looked like Northern Lights, and one of the kit has Totemic Medallions designed by Tlinglit Wood Carver Tommy Joseph. My memento quilt kit is Bright Spirits of the North by Lisa Moore of Quilts with a Twist. I also brought back gifts for two of my quilter friends. One is a panel designed by a local artist, and the other is a table runner with fabric designed with fireweed.

The Totemic Medallion quilt is Eagles and Ravens and it will help me remember on of our guides who told us about being from the Raven clan and how they are pretty much all related so they marry into the Eagle clan and he his girlfriend was an Eagle. He had a fabulous ring that was an entwined raven and eagle.

We traveled Holland America and I really didn't feel crowded. My roommate cruises all the time and she said it was the biggest cabin she had ever had. I found the train boring after a while. I think the most crowded I felt was on the plane traveling too and from.
