    Default THANKS SO MUCH!!!

I would like to thank all of you for your nice comments and pm's about my new sewing space. I can't wait to get in there and actually use it. I have a new quilt to bind that I'm excited about.

I wish I had a magic wand I could wave over all of you and give you your dream sewing space. I've learned a few things from this adventure:

    1. Even if you have a small space like mine, large cabinets don't necessarily make it seem smaller...quite the opposite. One or two large pieces can make a room feel larger than lots of smaller pieces.

    2. Wrapping your fabric onto comic book boards is a terrific way to get organized. It seems to make your collection more compact, Something about the motion of wrapping really bothered my back, so allow yourself time for breaks.

    3. You get to know your Hubby really well when you build something with directions together....we managed not to kill each other!!! There's something about men and directions that will never mesh.

    4. Don't rule anything out that could help you get organized. My cabinets are intended to be wardrobes. They came with a hanging rod on both sides. I got rid of the rods and added as many drawers as I could. I also saw other possibilities at Lowe's if I had a different kind of space. Everything doesn't have to be new. I found a unique walll rack at a flea market yesterday that I will repaint white and use as a thread holder. Old armoires can be reworked into clever storage cabinets...so many possibilities.

Again, thank you all so much....you're a great group!! Hugs, Barb

I really want to get those cabinets for my space. I love the white. My whole basement is painted in a soft mocha color trimmed in white, so they will match quite well. Thanks for sharing so many details about your project!

No need to thank us, we should be thanking you for sharing it with all of us. I am really contemplating taking the 'kids' room over. They don't spend the night here as much as they used to and I really really want my 'own' space. I already have 1 cabinet in there and a couple more would work great. Might need to steal one of my folding tables back from DH tho. I really do love, love, love your room.

Very interested to see that the new cupboards were meant to be wardrobes, Barb, they are identical on the outside to my new kitchen pantry cupboards LOL

Barb, I got my son to put slatted shelved in a wardrobe to put my stuff in, I still do not have enough room for all my fabric, so I am putting an embergo on buying new fabric unless I absolutly do not have any choice in the matter. Then I plan to re-arrange evrything.

One problem I have is that my sewing machine cabinet is rather large and when its out I have to fold one side in the get in the wardrobe........would like to change that, but cannot as things are.

I am sure you are going to love working in your new sewing room...............................

THANKS SO MUCH!!!-img_20120530_182819.jpgI cut pieces of poster board with an exacto knive (like you do wall board) and used that for my fabric. It is much sturdier than comic book boards, or at least I would think. It isn't acid free, but I don't think comic boards are either. Fabric should be used a lot quicker than something antique would be stored. The good thing about poster boards is you can cut them any size you want. I cut thinner ones for my fat quarters, and larger ones for my yardage. You could even make bolt size ones if you want. It gives you lots of options. The 1/4 inch thickness allows you to use a pin to fasten the fabric. I love them. Of course, it is more expensive, but because of Walmart's incorrect advertising, I got 10 big boards for $2.97, so I bought 40. That made them 30 cents a board, and I get 8 or more out of that.

The comic book boards are acid free. They are for collectors to stabilize their books to maintain mint condition.

I think poster board is a great idea. I wouldn't have had the patience to cut it all because I needed 300 boards. When I needed a sturdier board for a large cut of fabric I just used two boards. I secured my fabric ends with pins. For now it's all good. My main issue was I needed to get things organized or I was going to quit sewing. It seems like you have so mucch less fabric when everything is wrapped. I may even do a little fabric shopping!! Just kidding....I have enough fabric to keep both of us in quilts forever!!
