Default Am I out of line?

I contacted the person who commissioned the beach quilt from me and told her that my quilty friends had told me to charge 400 for labor for the king size quilt but that it didn't feel right so i was only going to charge her 300. Given all the issues that i had with the binding (see the thread "see ya) am I out of line? I don't want to piss her off but at the same time want to be paid for my work, I have worked about 38 hours total on this quilt to get it done so fast. I can always come down but i didn't want to start to low either.

Any and all opinions are welcome

Federal minimum wage is 7.25 so if you were to go by that it would be 275.50. Then you have the materials. So 300 is probably reasonable because I don't think most people get minimum wage for their quilts. Subtract the price of the goods from the 300 and then divide what's left by 38 and you will have what you will be making per hour.

I have seen some quilts for 1,700 - don't know if they sell them but that is the price they have on them.

Most tied quilts won't bring as high a price as quilted ones either, so it was probably good that the price is lower.

I wouldn't ask less, it was a very big undertaking for you, and you did it so quickly. You really put in a lot of work on it. If she thinks that is too high, she won't bother you again to make such a big quilt. I'd have said no the minute I heard the word kingsize!

Kellie, you are not out of line at all. A handmade quilt of that size would cost a lot more in most shops that I have seen. We quilters are selling ourselves short in most cases. I recently sold a quilt top (not quilted) for $50. Hope that helps.

Next time I'd agree on a set price (in writing) before starting the quilt -- then you don't have to worry about what the buyer will think and you won't end up short changing yourself if they don't want to pay what you think your time is worth. I have declined making quilts for people because I knew I would end up making next to nothing since the fabric/thread/batting already cost more than most people are willing to pay. Good luck!

No you are not out of line. I think $300 is a fair price for all the time you put into it. I would not go lower.

You are NOT out of line. Quilting takes a lot of time and talent. You should be paid for your work. Don't go lower than $250 if she balks at $300.
