Default Re: Am I out of line?

I fully agree that sewers and quilters are underpaid as most artisans are, however there are different levels at work as Marilyn pointed out. A tied quilt isn't the same as a quilted quilt. A SITD isn't the same as a FMQ with 5 different patterns within the same quilt.

The quality of workmanship makes the difference between $10 and $25 per hour, beginners normally cannot command $25 plus an hour at the start of any career.

A degreed graphic designer in LA can start at $18/hr if they have a good portfolio and have good software skills/work ethics/etc. The professors in college only talk about $80,000 - $100,000 a year. Yes, I made that in my corporate job after 10 years of hard work, working 10-12 hrs a day, being on call 24/7. Not without paying my dues, learning my trade, practicing the basic skills over and over.

Kellie did a wonderful job, she worked hard, had struggled with the binding, tied the quilt, not quilted it. The extra time in binding isn't to be billed to the customer, over shooting a project is not the customer's problem, that's a learning curve on Kellie's cost side. I don't have a problem with that, we all want to grow as we grow our business. One just has to be careful not to disappoint the customer, who hired to have a specific job done to specifications.

Sometimes you have step away if you can't meet the challenge or you take the challenge and give up your time to learn a new aspect to complete it, but it better be the best you can do or your customer is going to be unhappy. Unhappy normally means it's going to cost you $.
