I know I've been talking a lot lately about the new cabinets for my sewing space. At last here are a few pictures. Only the cabinets and the fabric organization are complete. I still need to hang a quilt on the wall and make a valance for the windows. Until I decide about buying a new sewing machine I will continue working on folding tables, which actually I don't mind.
First of all my room is very small, 10x12 feet. In this room I have to keep all my quilting supplies and what I need to run our company. I bought 3 assemble-yourself wardrobe cabinets from Lowes plus a few drawers which were extra. DH and I put the cabinets together in about a week. They are bolted to studs in the wall behind them so they won't tip and they are sitting on a sheet of plywood because the room has carpet. The most challenging thing about this project was having to build these large cabinets in such a small room.
I wrapped 300 comic book boards with fabric one yard or larger and sorted them by color or type: reds, blues, neutrals, 1930's repro, Asian, batiks and tribal, solids, etc. Every color or type has its own shelf. Of course there is a section for pre-cuts!! The rest are folded like FQ's and lined up in plastic shoe boxes in front of the wrapped boards. For extra large cuts of fabric (5 yards or more) I folded them and put them on a bottom shelf. The drawers are wonderful and we still have two more to install. There is still a lot of fine tuning that needs to be done and I still need to use a few plastic drawer units.
The Featherweight machines are on the bottoms of the cabinets. There is also a shelf for quilt backings, batting and even a UFO shelf! These cabinets are working out great. I was so junked up before I couldn't find a thing. While this is not a perfect solution, given our space issue I am very pleased with what we've done. My DH really worked hard to put these together for me. In our next home I hope to have the sewing room of my dreams.
Thanks for looking!! Barb
