Hi Nancy and welcome from the sunny central coast of California. I'm no pro for sure. Got hooked on Jenny's tutes. It has been a wild ride since then. I love scrap quilts. I am working on several right now, testing blocks. Check out fat quarters and also MSQC also has bags of scraps from their cuttings. Other sites do too. Might also be a way to get a variety of pieces. Glad you are joining us!
Hi Nancy, Welcome to the forum. Sometimes you can find fabric and/or scraps at garage sales or estate sales. You might also check at your area quilt shop. The one in my area sells bags of scraps from their classes projects.
Hi, Nancy!! I am not a pro, that's for sure!!! I am a confident beginner even though I've been quilting for about 5-7 yrs, with a lot of time in between!! And sometimes I don't feel too confident!! But I love fabric, love quilting magazines and books, and I love when I finish a project, which isn't often!! Welcome to the forum!!!

Hello Nancy and welcome from Wisconsin...I have bought the bag o'scraps from the MSQC twice now and you get quite a bit for the money, some of the pieces are the size of a fat 1/8 and others are just a little bitty thing...all sizes and colors but what fun to get the bag and open it up. They get them from their cutting tables.
Welcome Nancy lots of Fabulous quilting ideas here on MSQC Forum. Where do I get fabric scraps???? I wait for Fat Quarters go on sale and stock up...I've also found 100% cotton old clothes from my closet, new cotton shower curtain at discount store, nice plaid shirts from the thrift store, fabric at yard sales if it smells ok sometimes it's been in the basement and smells musty or they are smokers...yuck, Flea Markets, but mostly new wait for it to be on sale and sign up for coupons! If it's toward the end of the bolt sometimes they will offer it to you at a discount just to get rid of it. Again 100% cotton, quilting weight, nothing you can see through, clean, and smells good.
Hi Nancy and welcome to the forum! The tutorial on this site shows how to make a table runner using the quilt-as-you-go method, which works best on small projects. If you have a bad back it would be best to take your quilts to someone who does long-arm quilting. Missouri Star offers that service or you could find one through your local quilt shop. Basting and machine or hand quilting is really hard on your back....ask me how I know!
As far as putting together a stash, take advantage of some of the Daily Deals here. If you have a JoAnn store near you, they have great coupon sales on their better fabrics. It takes a while to put together a good stash!

I get the scrap bags from the local quilt shops. I usually get alot of fabric in each bag for under 5.00. They are like a little pick-me-up for me. LOL
