Hello all...I was wondering if any of you own this machine? I want to dabble a bit in embroidery, and this one embroiders and sews. Thought for the price it might be a good backup machine, plus learn a new creative craft. If you own it, do you like it? Just needing a little guidance, please.

Think this is the one my sis just bought and she loves it. Only does 4" embroidery, but that is perfect size for making labels.
I have the Brother SE270D and I love it. I bought it a few years ago to learn on and am still using it, someday I may upgrade to a larger machine. I have 3 brother machines and love them all!
Hey Lisa! I bought the Brother SE400 a few months ago and still love it. I bought it mainly to replace my 30-year old Necchi for sewing and quilting. I really want a larger machine but that will have to wait a bit. This one fit my needs nicely for the moment. I've only played with the embroidery twice and both projects turned out beautifully. You are limited to 4" embroidery but seems to do the job well. It is a good machine to dabble in machine embroidery and expand from there if it is something you enjoy. It sews and quilts nicely and is a fun little machine that packs a punch. Good luck in your quest.
I would love to have a larger machine, but I can't justify the cost of even a smaller machine. I have a serger that I bought about 15 years ago. I bought it off of QVC, the shopping site. When it came, I took it out of the box, said I can't do that, and put it into its case where it is to this day. Not a stitch ever taken. I think that would happen to an embroidery machine, although I can imagine a quilt made up of beautiful embroideried blocks!

Just take it one step at a time... if there is no book,,, go to their website... they may even have video....or check on YouTube.. what kind is it??? They can be intimidating... but when you have some time... give it a whirl...............girl!!!:) Barbara
My machine has a larger embroidery field but I seldom use designs larger than the 4 x 4. That is pretty big when stitched out. How large (number of stitches) will it stitch out? Some will stitch a design with no more than 25,000 and some many, many more.
Hard to find that number...but according to one site I found the claim is 32,000 stitches. The hoop size is 4 x 4 and my thought is that I can't ever see me embroidering a large design...like the back of a jacket. But, if I would want to incorporate a few designs together...couldn't I do that by repositioning the hoop?
I think you could reposition the hoop. Most designs I stitch are less than 25,000 because it takes quite a while for them to stitch out. You can look at designs on the websites that sell them and they will tell how many stitches in the designs. Keep us posted with what you decide. Can hardly wait to see your work!
I don't have the brother machine YET but am planning on getting one at the end of the month.

Coffetime...I have heard that those are nice machines. I am not sure how "into" embroidery I will be..so I am starting small, and cheap(er)! LOL
Lisa, I really like the Ellageo. I started with the Ellure Plus and it is wonderful but doesn't begin to have the bells and whistles the Ellageo has. I really like the sewing on the Ellure Plus. It sews very, very well.

I have spent considerable time looking at the Babylock machines, but there is no way I could ever buy one at their price. I would only want one for making a quilt block. I was just at Walmart today, and picked up some thread. I saw what I think is the Brother SE400, but it might have been another model. In any case, it was an embroidery and sewing machine. I was tempted, but not just now. I have always thought I'd like a bigger than 4 inch design, but then you can move the hoop to fill in more of a block.
I know....If I spent all that money on a machine I would never have money to buy fabric, let alone embroidery supplies!!! LOL At our local Wallyworld the only sewing/embroidery machine they have on display is the SE400. (They also have an embroidery only machine, which looks like a sewing machine, i think it is a PE700.)Quote:

This post is great! I've been looking at the embroidery machines but cost is a huge factor. All the comments are very helpful and I may consider the brother. Only problem is I began with a brother as a young mommy but once I got my Viking, I've been spoiled by the power it has.

I wish I could make a decision...my machine is in the shop for the second time this week so I am not getting any of my sewing projects done! Truth be told, I am not getting alot of other stuff done either! LOL
I was in Texas at my sister's house a couple weeks ago. We went to a fabric outlet/Babylock dealer and we were talking to the lady that works there. My sister had purchased her serger from her last year. I looked at the biggest embroidery/sewing machine that Babylock sold. I can't remember the name of it, but it has the largest hoop and is 10 or 11 thousand dollars. I mentioned to the lady selling them that it looked very much like the big Brother machine. She said "Yes, Brother makes that machine for Babylock." Well, that big Brother machine is priced at $8500.00 out here where I take my machines in for repairs. I don't know if Brother makes any of the other machines for Babylock. It might be worth it to ask a dealer.
You know, I have heard that their is a Brother/Babylock connection...and also a connection between Janome and Kenmore. I do believe it is true a lot of times, and not just in the sewing machine arena..you are paying for the name. I was chatting with my sister today who about 25 years ago forked out some big bucks for a Viking Machine. She loved the machine, but found it had too many bells and whistles that she never used. Once it started needed frequent repair, she traded it in for a good ole' Singer. Plain and simple and it has served her well for the past 10 years. I would just be thrilled to death right now to have a working machine....
I have Brother machines and my DD brought her Kenmore over and I was using that while my embroidery machine was tied up making millions of leaves.....well I liked the Kenmore so much that I finally ordered me one - the one I got is made by Janome for Kenmore.Quote:

I worked at KMart in the early 80's...and a lot of their brand of stuff was made by name brand companies....Just goes to show, go with what you like and forget about impressing the rest, LOL.
I have always heard that Babylock and Brother were both made by the same company. I have been thinking about a new machine, kinda torn between the Brother and a Singer for about the same price. Singer doesn't embroider but comes with XL extension table, and tons of stitches. When it comes right down to it, gonna have a hard time spending that much on myself. I currently sew on a manual Brother, nothing computerized about it, and I do just fine. If I got a new computerized one would have to take lessons on how to sew on the dang thing. Would be another reason for me to visit Rhonda or have her back up here though, lol.
