I was chatting with my sister today who about 25 years ago forked out some big bucks for a Viking Machine. She loved the machine, but found it had too many bells and whistles that she never used. Once it started needed frequent repair, she traded it in for a good ole' Singer. Plain and simple and it has served her well for the past 10 years. I would just be thrilled to death right now to have a working machine....
I have Brother machines and my DD brought her Kenmore over and I was using that while my embroidery machine was tied up making millions of leaves.....well I liked the Kenmore so much that I finally ordered me one - the one I got is made by Janome for Kenmore.

A lot of companies make stuff and put different brand names on it. Way back in the day I worked in a meat processing plant (hams) and this one small company packaged hams for many different companies - the brand names got the best cuts and then it went down the line from there. So I imagine that is what is done with a lot of stuff, including sewing machines.
