I have been working on building a stash of fabric and have it in clear plastic bins with lids. How do you organize your stash? By color, by theme (animal, flower, children's fabric, batiks, etc.)? I don't know where to begin -- right now there is no rhyme or reason to how my fabric is stored and I'd like to organize it a bit. Thanks in advance for your comments! :)

I was trying to spray baste and I flubbed it terribly. I tried to fold the top back and sprayed onto the flannel. (I'm not using batting for this one) I'm doing it on the floor and it was a mess to flip it back over. I had to stand on it and my feet picked up the fabric on the edges. lol

So I say to heck with it and throw it in the wash, iron it all again, look up a site that shows to roll up the top from both ends to the middle. Seemed easy enough. Not.

I'm using 505 but it sprays so wide and I think I'm over spraying. Any suggestions?

I'm going to make a big star quilt but am stumped about the proper way to add sashing. Do you

1) sash two sides (3 on the top blocks) each block and then sew the blocks together resulting in sashed blocks? Or

2) sash just between the blocks when you sew them into rows and then sew long strips of sashing between the rows?

The only time I did sashing I did the long sashing strips between rows and had a very hard time getting the blocks to line up.

What's the correct or easiest (because I'm all about easy) way to do it?

Thanks for your help!

Hello! I need some help. My story goes like this: I was going to take a class called "1600 inch" quilt at the local Cloth Castle. The instructor, Natasha, said that I didn't need the class, I could do it on my own, just go to Missouri Star Quilt Company & watch the tutorial. Well, I did: the tutorial & the quilt top! Thanks, Jenny, I just adore your tutorials!! But I'm stuck! I've got the top done, I have the fabric for the finishing, but I haven't a Clue as to how to quilt it!! I can certainly stitch in the ditch, but that just goes in one direction. Will that be enough? Do I need to go in the other direction? My plan is to give it to our local Quilts of Valour (I am a retired veteran) so I want to do a thorough job. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

I've been working on my scrappy/string/strip pieced quilt from my "instant stash". I have 60 squares done, laid out in 15 blocks. Once I get the layout finalized I am going to add a border. But for now I am trying to determine the layout of my blocks.

In theory I want it to look scrappy.... but I am trying to figure out exactly what that means for the specific layout. Right now I have matched up the purple fabrics so that each block center is all one fabric pattern. I don't know if that's ideal though, because the sizes are different so I end up with 4 purples that look like they should line up perfectly, but they don't.

I do like the darkest stripes put together in blocks, but I'm thinking of mixing up some of the medium pinks so they aren't all matched up as they (mostly) are now.

Any thoughts or opinions are appreciated!

Hi everyone,
I started quilting almost a year ago, learning on my own and reading blogs etc. Anyway, I have been wanting to do a triangle quilt for months but was afraid of the points and stuff. I decided on a whim (I needed a soccer gift by this fri ugh) to grab some soccer fabric and Kona solids and do my 1st triangle quilt! I ordered the Fons & Porter pyramid ruler, I wanted everything just right. As I pieced my rows together, everything fit beautifully, it's all straight and matched. I thought, "Well, this is a breeze!" I went to sew the 1st two rows together and opened it up and gasp! My points are gone :( As I looked at others pics, I saw that I didn't have a 1/4 inch above the points, therefore they were cut off in the seam. And if you look at the right side of the triangle and follow it to the row below, it doesn't match up like it should (obviously! the missing points threw things out of whack). I was so upset I went to bed and cried (yes, ridiculous I know). What did I do wrong? I just don't understand. The only conclusion I come to is I pieced the triangles wrong, but don't know how I could of done it any differently. I thought having the pyramid ruler I was good to go. I will have to finish as is, he is a young man that won't care about my points but I'm just heartbroken and plan to do more of these. Hoping someone can tell me where I went wrong here. My first big quilting "OH...NO"! Chris

I decided that I wanted to embroider a small butterfly hidden on a quilt I am making for my little GD. I hadn't used the embroidery part of my machine in a long time so I spent some time practicing, downloading a few machine embroidery designs to consider, etc. I used regular thread to do that since it was just practice, but now that I feel comfortable doing it on the quilt, I want to get the right thread. Does anybody who does machine embroidery have any good ideas on what would be the best thread? Madiera, Sulky, other? 40 wt? Although I don't have lots of extra money laying around for my hobbies, I am also a believer in buying the best you can so that you get the results you want. Does anyone have a good website or other source for the purchase of thread? Now that I have gotten back in touch with embroidery, I do see myself using it more often. Is there benefit to buying one of the 20, 40, 80 spool sets (definitely not taking my husband with me if I do that!)? Oh and...rayon or poly?

As a new quilter, I'd like to try Jenny's String Quilt using all 2-1/2" jelly roll strips. I have white for the center strip to form the outline squares or X's. I'm thinking of using a black & white print jelly roll with it and wonder how (or if) I could include solid black so it will look like a black square in the center of the O where the 4 corners meet. If I keep my seams a consistent 1/4" and am using all 2-1/2" strips, shouldn't it be fairly even to look like a black box when blocks are put together? And where would I place that black strip on the paper? Hope you know what I'm trying to ask - I confused myself when I just read that over! Thanks for any help.
